Kelela doesn't return she arrives. With new avatar, her third studio album released via Warp Records, the Washington D.C.-born singer and songwriter steps forward with a project that feels less like a follow-up and more like a reckoning a record that draws from everywhere she has lived musically, weaving together shoegaze, grunge, R&B, and electronic music into something that is entirely, unmistakably her own.
To mark the moment, Kelela shares the music video for "the bridge," featuring PinkPantheress a pairing that feels as inevitable as it does inspired. The track is soft and dreamlike, built on a steady rhythmic thump and whispered background vocals that pull you in close and hold you there. The production is stripped back and atmospheric, leaving space for both artists' airy, luminous vocals to intertwine in a way that sounds less like a feature and more like a conversation between two people who understand each other completely.
At its heart, "the bridge" is a song about desire in its most complicated form a relationship that may not be entirely good for you, and the quiet, persistent pull of it anyway. It is the kind of emotional territory that Kelela navigates better than almost anyone, finding beauty and honesty in the spaces most artists are afraid to enter.
new avatar represents a bold and deeply personal pivot a return to Kelela's roots in Washington D.C.'s independent music scene, where shoegaze and indie rock shaped her earliest creative instincts long before the world caught up with her. She has described the album as one that "finds solace in confronting" not an escape from the world, but a way of making sense of it, and of finding within it the beauty and joy that still exist.
The New Avatar Live world tour follows, arriving in North America on 8th September before moving through Europe in the autumn including a date at London's O2 Academy Brixton on 4th November. new avatar is out now via Warp Records.
