Queens native Lexa Gates first caught my attention with her breakout single “What You Wish For.” Her sound carries a distinctly nostalgic 90s New York energy — the kind of grit, glamour, and attitude that defined the era. There are flashes of Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown in her delivery, not in imitation but in spirit; she moves with that unmistakable New York cadence that feels both classic and current.

Her production choices deepen that lineage. Gates gravitates toward beats that blend jazz and soul textures with the hard-edged, borough‑bred sound that shaped the city’s golden age, creating a style that feels rooted yet entirely her own.

Lexa ran for ten hours as part of an art installation pop-up to promote the release of “I Am” on Thursday the 15th of January. For a second, I assumed the title “I AM” was a nod to Nas’s iconic album of the same name. But it turns out it’s much more personal than that — the name actually comes from her own initials, Ivanna Alexandra Martinez.

“I Am” is a collection of personal introspective songs that gives listeners an insight into Lexa’s life. Every song feels like it was created from real life experiences standout tracks include “Rest Of My Life” and “You’re Better Off”.
