Today, On December 5th, Alté pioneer Boj makes a triumphant return with his highly anticipated sixth studio album, ‘Duplicity’. The project is led by the euphoric, Afropop-leaning single “Imposter Syndrome” featuring boundary-pushing Nigerian artist Obongjayar. Produced by longtime collaborator Genio, the track stands tall as an immediate highlight, confident, sleek, and boldly signaling a daring new chapter in Boj’s journey. Across thirteen genre-blurring tracks, Boj pushes the Alté sound he helped define into thrilling new territory. Blending Afropop, Afrobeats, hip-hop, and beyond, he continues to craft globally resonant, future-minded music that underscores both his versatility and his uncompromising artistic vision. ‘Duplicity’ showcases some of his most audacious moments yet, from the dark, experimental charge of “Italawa” with Odumodublvck and SGaWD, to the dance-floor pulse of “Ijo”, and the irresistibly catchy “Cana” featuring acclaimed UK singer and rapper Pa Salieu. A master of innovation, Boj once again raises the bar, proving that Alté is more than a genre, it’s a movement, and he remains one of its defining leaders. ‘Duplicity’ is Boj’s most personal, adventurous work to date. Shot through with searing honesty and sonic innovation, the album sees Boj place himself under the microscope, running his personal life through a warts-and-all autopsy as he grapples with the conflict between Boj the artist and Boj the man. Speaking on the album Boj said:
“Duplicity is my exploration of the two sides of me, the version the world thinks it knows, and the one only the closest to me ever meet. We all live behind masks, not out of deceit, but protection. One hand holds the charismatic extrovert, loud and electric, the other, the quiet introvert, flawless. Together, they make me whole."
‘Duplicity’ has been teased over recent months through a series of double-drops, each release fueling anticipation while demonstrating the full range of Boj’s vision and evolution. These included the culturally rich “Shana” with Show Dem Camp and Ghanaian rapper Joey B, the late-night anthem “After Hours” featuring French-Gabonese talent Anaïs Cardot, and the two most recent drops: the Olamide-assisted “Contraband” and “Diamonds” featuring rising star Mavo. “Diamonds” was accompanied by a video that was shot in Lagos and highlights Duplicity’s central theme, the balance between light and dark, good and bad and the various sides of Boj. Executive-produced by Genio, the creative force behind Boj’s classics “Abracadabra” (with Davido & Mr Eazi) and “Your Love” (with Tiwa Savage) — the album effortlessly fuses genres creating an exhilarating, dancefloor-ready experience. With additional production from Spax, Blaise Beats, and Studio Magic, ‘Duplicity’ pushes Alté into thrilling new territory while remaining true to the genre’s roots.
Boj’s legacy is one of reinvention and cultural leadership. After breaking through with BOTM and further defining his artistry on 2017’s Magic — which featured icons like Wande Coal, Olamide, and Simi — he teamed up with AjeButter22 for 2018’s cult classic ‘Make E No Cause Fight’, home to the beloved anthem “Tungba.” Alongside producer Spax, he helped shape the very foundation of what the world now recognizes as the Alté movement. His milestone Gbagada Express series (2022–2023) amplified his global reach, boasting major collaborations including Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, Fireboy DML, BNXN, Victony, Knucks, and Enny. The project received widespread critical acclaim and industry recognition — scoring an AIM Award nomination for Best Album, earning Album of the Year from The Guardian UK, and winning Best Alté Album at The Headies. Boj later delivered a standout feature on Dave’s platinum-selling album We’re All Alone In This Together and made his UK live debut with a sold-out headline show at Village Underground, joined by surprise guests Wizkid and Enny. To close out 2023, he returned with another installment of Make E No Cause Fight, before releasing 12 Summers earlier this year — a reflective celebration of his 12-year journey featuring Odumodublvck, Adekunle Gold, Blanco, Sainté, and more.
A modern masterpiece, shot through with hot Lagos nights leading to remorseful hung over mornings, Duplicity finds Boj being as forward looking in his musical palette, as he is old fashioned in his commitment to creating an album as a cohesive body of work. Having developed Nigeria’s Alte sound - and indeed given it its name in the first place - Duplicity shows just how far the genre can go
